Case Zomai

About Case Zomai

The Case called Zomai is the place where the prison was located where slaves were locked up before being transported to the Americas by boat. Only those who were able to serve were parked here. The others deemed useless were put in the common grave located right next door, sometimes still alive!!!
This terrible place. is today symbolized by three sculptures. The middle one shows the map of Benin on which are engraved symbols that only a competent guide can explain to you. Francis, who is from the place, tells us that.
The head with its powerful eyes, which is located at the bottom right, represents the Yoruba people from Nigeria then kingdom of Oyo, who had migrated to the coast. The Fons peoples, from the other Fons kingdoms conquered by the Dahomey kingdom of Abomey, are represented by small white Ts inlaid on the left. The large head at the top right represents the people of Ouidah Python, the Xwedah or the Xwlah (pronounced flat)
The 2 close signs in the shape of a T, located at the top left. represent the Fulani peoples of the North.
Finally the balance located at the top left, symbolizes injustice and the squares on the right, the prison in which all these peoples are locked up by the royal power of Dahomey from the 17th to the 19th centuries. On each side, a statue of a chained and shackled slave, recalls this tyranny.
